More Surface Area, Better Flow, Reduced Inlet Temperature!
Compressed air is heated air—and when you mix high boost pressure with
an aggressive fuel curve, the result can be inlet temperatures as high
as 500 degrees F. That’s why BD developed the new Cool-It intercooler.
An intercooler functions identically to a radiator, except instead of
water, compressed (and therefore heated) air passes through the
intercooler’s core. Meanwhile, ambient air passes through the external
fins, removing excess heat energy. Cooler air is more dense, and
therefore, the engine can benefit from more pounds of air for a given
amount of time.
With 57% more cooling surface area and a 33% thicker core, the Cool-It
increases cooling efficiency to approximately 90%, compared to only 70%
for the stock intercooler. That can mean a temperature reduction of up
to 200 degrees Fahrenheit!. At the same time, 36% larger inlet and
discharge tubes (3.125-inch vs. 2.625-inch) and cast tanks with
internal support struts can handle up to 100 psi of boost and over 1500 cfm, while holding pressure drop to less than 1 psi .
The Cool-It intercooler’s extruded tube design offers numerous advantages compared to other designs on the market:
